Father Simone’s Word of the Week

The morning before I left for vacation, I dropped to my knees “Hailed Mary” and told Jesus “I trust in YOU.”  I had no idea how much I would much I would need to trust Him, but that I would need to.  Anything that could have gone wrong did.  We left about 20 minutes late for the airport.  Then on the way my brother realized he left something at home, so we turned around.  The tension was building and we were jabbering at one another, but I remained calm.  When we finally went to check in at the airport, the agent behind the desk alerted us that we needed to fill out online certification before we could check in.  He saw my ID and acclaimed he was Christian
too.  It was less than an hour before the flight departed.  We scrambled to get this done.  Under my breath, I was tempted to say “We’re gonna miss our flight.”  All the while Kelly the agent saw our distress but assured us we were fine.  His voice and gentle confidence kept us reassured.  It was then too late to check-in or check our bags.  We “calmly” strolled into security.  Both my brother and mother were stopped at security.  Their bags were slowly picked apart and they were searched (like terrorists).  All I could do was wait.  When they finally emerged, it was 5 minutes before departure.  There was Kelly waiting at the gate, calm and confident as ever.  With 3 minutes to spare, he checked me in.  As we walked down the corridor, my mother was bewildered.  My brother was jumping out of his skin.  I had a smile on my face, remembering I told Jesus I trusted Him and He got us there!  Despite everything that went wrong, Jesus who is not bound by time, already saw how He would get us there and how he would use Kelly to keep us calm, walk with us and get us on that plane.

Trusting Jesus is an invisible reality that supersedes visible reality.  He is not bound by minutes and seconds but is completely present to us.  He is not bound by our limits but is “in it” with us.  If our trust doubts that: Trusting Jesus won’t pay my bills; He can’t make ends meet; He can’t fix this situation; He can’t make this work or get me there…we reduce ourselves to doing it alone.  When things go wrong, one thing after another, do we blame God or think He is just watching us struggle?  Or do see opportunities He is allowing us to choose to trust?  Do we hate the devil and think “Why me?”  Or do we trust and wait for the victory we know will come through Him?  When we come up short, it gives place for His grace.  When Jesus said to tell Him “I trust in you”, that trust encompasses the entire journey, journey’s end and every breath in between.  His Mercy is why we do.
